The length of Callum Morton’s contract at Bristol Rovers has been revealed after signing for the club last Friday. Morton made his first competitive appearance since November 2024 when he came on in the last four minutes against Notts County last Saturday. This came after he sustained a long-term injury while on loan at Northampton Town from Salford City during the previous season.

On Tuesday, Morton also played 35 minutes in the penalty shootout victory against Cambridge United, but missed his spot-kick, with Ben Hughes diving to his right to deny the striker from 12 yards out.

When Rovers announced the signing on Friday 28th November, it was announced as a “short-term deal”.

Speaking about the length of his contract during an interview on BBC Radio Bristol’s Having a Gas podcast , Morton said: “Yeah, I think so. I think in terms of the short-term deal, it probably works for both parties in the short-term. I mean, obviously, Bristol Rovers are sort of light at the top end of the pitch and that’s sort of what I hope can come in and sort of work my way into the team and then obviously, if that happens, then as long as I’m doing well, then it works for both parties.

“If it’s extended, then obviously, yeah, I think until the end of January currently is where the deal’s at. So yeah, it works for both parties. I just sort of need to get myself back to fitness and help the team, hopefully.”

Despite Rovers’ limited attacking options, with Promise Omochere out injured, the signing of Morton came as a surprise to Rovers supporters. “Yeah, it was quite out of the blue, really,” Morton said when asked about the process of signing for the Gas.

“I sort of got a text message on the weekend before I came in, which was the weekend before the Notts County game and then sort of came in on the Monday, trained for three or four days and then yeah, signed on the Friday and then straight into the squad on Saturday.”

He added: “Obviously, with the position I was in, in terms of coming back from the long-term injury, it was, yeah, I was sort of just training by myself really, just coming back from the long-term injury. And then I had a little bit of a niggle as well with the calf, so I was out for a couple of months with that.

“And then sort of just doing my own thing individually working one-to-one with people and then, yeah, I just sort of needed a team environment to train with. I was sort of going to go elsewhere, and then I got a text message from someone at the club and, yeah, it just transpired and all happened really quickly.”

In Friday’s pre-match press conference at The Quarters , Clarke was asked about Morton and said: “Yeah, obviously [he is] very rusty, but done well at the level before, had a couple of injuries. Listen, you’re not picking up a player that’s out a contract that’s going to come and hit the ground running.

“We just thought there was an opportunity to look at him for six, seven weeks, see how he does, see how he beds in, he’s fitted in well with the players and hopefully the more training minutes he gets and the odd minutes here there and everywhere puts him in a better place and hopefully he can return to the player he was a few years ago.”
