DW brings you reports and analysis on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s first visit to both Jordan and Israel since taking office.

The relationship between Germany and Israel has always been charged with a special historical significance owing to Germany’s responsibility for the Holocaust.

Germany was among the top foreign weapons suppliers to Israel and supported the country’s right to respond to the October 7 Hamas attacks. But the German government also raised concerns about suffering in the Gaza Strip as the offensive went on.

Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire nearly two months ago, but have since accused each other of violating the terms of the deal.

Despite frequent flare-ups, the deal appears to be largely holding with the first phase of the deal inching toward completion.

Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by Germany, Israel, the US and other governments.
