A man was in police custody when he died following an incident at a Glasgow city centre flat.

Emergency services rushed to Berkeley Street after the alarm was raised at 6.45am on Friday, December 5.

Police Scotland has confirmed a 39-year-old man was taken into police custody where he became unresponsive before being pronounced dead at the scene.

Two women, aged 25 and 40, and a 27-year-old man were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the man’s death is being treated as unexplained, and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Emergency crews remain at the scene on Saturday morning but officers confirmed there is no risk to the wider public.

Photos taken from the scene on Friday showed a large cordon in place with multiple officers standing guard. A small forensic tent was also erected in the middle of the road.

Forensic officers in white suits were on the scene and were spotted taking swabs and pictures of a cop car at the scene. Multiple police vehicles and ambulances were in attendance.

One eyewitness, who stays in an apartment on the street, said her flatmate heard “shouting” at the time of the incident.

She said: “I live right beside where the body is. I don’t know what has happened but my flatmate said she saw four people outside shouting this morning.”

One man attempting to enter the Gurdwara Temple said he was “shocked”. He added: “I turned up to the temple this morning and I can’t enter. I was shocked at the police presence. Something horrible has happened.”

Another resident heard sirens on Friday morning. She said: “I heard sirens whizzing past my house at around 7am this morning. I just assumed they were taking a shortcut for something happening in the town. I never expected anything to happen on this street.”

A statement from Police Scotland on Saturday morning read: “Enquiries are continuing after police were called to a report of a disturbance in Berkeley Street, Glasgow around 6.45am on Friday, 5 December.

“A 39-year-old man was taken into police custody, became unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service. His family is aware.

“Two women aged 25 and 40 and a 27-year-old man were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“The death is being treated as unexplained. Officers remain at the scene and there is no threat to the wider public.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 07:08 to attend an incident on Berkeley Street, Glasgow. We dispatched four ambulances, a paramedic response unit (PRU), a special operations response unit (SORT), and a trauma team to the scene.

“We transported one patient to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and two patients to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.”
