Dozens of flood warnings and alerts are in place today as thunderstorms — with 60mph gales — loom today.
The majority of flood warnings are for spots across the Southwest of England, which is subject to a thunderstorm alert by meteorologists with Netweather today. Storms will be heaviest this morning across Ceredigion in west Wales and parts of south Wales.
The Met Office says on its website: “Bands of showers will be most persistent across south Wales and southwest England, and some of these will be heavy, with the odd rumble of thunder. The ground in some of these areas is already saturated, so any extra heavy downpours will be far from welcome, potentially leading to tricky travel conditions and localised surface water issues.”
There are six flood warnings across Wales, and a further 26 less severe flood alerts. A further eight flood warnings are active in Scotland, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency says.

By this afternoon, it will be stormy as north as Lancashire with the band of low pressure slowly moving northeast. Downpours will rattle across Lancashire and Greater Manchester during the late afternoon period, and then drizzle will move eastwards over Yorkshire.
The storm alert, issued by Netweather, states “hail, gusty winds and torrential rain” are expected throughout the day. It adds: “Some well-scattered thunderstorms may develop around southern and western coastal areas, which could move inland too across southern and western areas.
“Hail, gusty winds, torrential rain leading to localised flooding are possible with stronger cells. An isolated tornado can’t be ruled out with any thunderstorms towards coastal areas of south England too, where strong bouyancy generated over the English Channel combined with strong low-level shear forecast here could make updrafts rotate.”
Temperatures are expected to remain mild, but winds will be gusty. Gale speeds may reach 60mph across parts of Devon and south Wales this morning, forecasters say. It will also be very windy during the early part of next week.
