Reading School, a selective state grammar school for boys based in central Reading, welcomed His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh on Friday, November 28, as part of the school’s commemorations marking its 900th year.
Prince Edward is the youngest son of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and was granted the Duke of Edinburgh title in 2023 by his brother, King Charles III.
Reading School told the Chronicle that the royal visit “marked a significant milestone” in their history and “underscored the vital importance” of their commitment to “delivering exceptional, inclusive education for local children”.

The school highlighted Prince Edward’s own “longstanding commitment to championing young people”, and said the visit from His Royal Highness had “reminded staff, students, parents and guests that strong community partnerships sit at the heart of all that is good about [Reading School]”.
During the visit, Prince Edward observed local primary school children taking part in the school’s social impact programme, Future Stories, which aims to “remove barriers” and make it possible for children “from all backgrounds” to benefit from the opportunities provided by Reading School.

The Future Stories programme sees Reading School students work alongside primary pupils in activities designed to “raise aspirations, build confidence and broaden access to high-quality learning opportunities”.
The Prince also visited creative design and Mandarin lessons, and had a chance to meet with Reading School’s Ukrainian students, members of the Combined Cadet Force, National Badminton Team winners, and the Street Dance Mentoring team.
