Things may be even frostier between Andy Murray and Nick Kyrgios after the Scot appears to have sent a message to his former foe without saying a word. At least not directly, that is, given Murray appears happy to speak his mind doing the rounds on the podcast circuit.
Every podcast except Kyrgios’, however, which is the issue at the core of their supposed fallout. The Australian has openly campaigned for two-time Wimbledon winner Murray to appear on his show in the past but has since suggested they are “not friends anymore.” Despite two very different profiles and personalities, Kyrgios and Murray seemed to develop a friendly relationship during their time as players. The former even thanked Murray in late 2023 after encouraging him to seek out mental health advice following his admission he’s experienced suicidal thoughts.
That camaraderie took a turn in October, however, when Kyrgios confessed he wasn’t even sure if he and Murray were friends anymore after he felt his peer had snubbed him. That was in relation to an invitation to come on his podcast, something Murray is yet to accept.
“I wouldn’t even know if he’s a friend anymore,” Kyrgios said on The Unscripted Show podcast. “I guess he’s just like a colleague. We used to be closer.
“He was one of the people that was very supportive of me through there. But now we kind of don’t talk as much.
“I wanted him on a podcast and he acted too important. So there’s your truth. It’s like, ‘Bro, find some time.'”
One might assume the usually demure Murray simply isn’t one to jump at a podcasting opportunity. But it appears that’s not the case given his recent activity over the airwaves.
Some fans couldn’t help but spot Murray’s recent spark in audio activity after he appeared on Romesh Ranganathan’s show and The Tennis Podcast in the space of a month. That would seem to suggest it’s nothing to do with the genre itself and perhaps more about the opportunities he wishes to accept (or in Kyrgios’ case, not).
Kyrgios’ comments indicate a marked downgrade in his perception of Murray last year. He appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored in July 2024 and highlighted their “great friendship at the time, as well as lauding Murray’s professionalism on the tennis circuit.
“Andy was always a big supporter of me. As soon as I came on the tour, he kind of saw a work in progress and took me under his wing,” he said at the time. “Then he realised later in my career that I don’t think I was coachable or I was on my own path, but he was always someone that was looking out for me.”
The whole ordeal could be entirely innocent and Murray simply hasn’t had the time to cameo on Kyrgios’ ‘Good Trouble’ show. Then again, it’s plausible the absence could be deliberate as the Glaswegian chooses his work commitments carefully in retirement.
