Merseyside Police have issued an update after a man was left fighting for his life following an assault. Officers were called to reports of members of the public giving CPR to a man who had been involved in a fight outside the Hare and Hounds pub.
Officers arrived at the corner of Mill Lane and West Derby Village in West Derby at around 12.45am where they found a 33-year-old man with serious head injuries. He was taken to Aintree Hospital where his condition is described as critical.
Police announced this morning that a 39-year-old man from Old Swan was arrested at the scene, while a 24-year-old man from Croxteth was arrested after he turned up at hospital with an injury to his face. Both were arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault.
In an update this evening, police said that the 24-year-old man from Croxteth has been released with no further action.
A 43 year-old from West Derby has now been arrested, also on suspicion of Section 18 assault. He has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives.
Firefighters were also called to the scene and a forensic tent was also put in place. Forensic examinations and house-to-house enquiries are being carried out.
Detectives are also examining CCTV footage to determine what took place.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve McGrath said this morning: “This is a serious assault that has sadly left a 33-year man in a critical condition in hospital.
“The investigation is in its early stages and we are trying to establish the circumstances of what happened.
“We have spoken to a number of witnesses at the scene and are appealing for anyone with information to please come forward.
“If you were in the area last night and saw what happened or have any information, let us know as a matter of urgency.
“If you live in the area or were driving past at the time, I’d ask you to review your CCTV or dashcam footage to see if you captured anything that could help our investigation.”
He added: “I would like to take the opportunity to thank the caring members of the public who carried out vital CPR on the injured man at the scene prior to the emergency services attending.”
