Birmingham City striker Lyndon Dykes played a key role in Scotland’s qualification for the World Cup
Lyndon Dykes celebrating Scotland’s qualification for the World Cup
Lyndon Dykes has suggested a lack of game time at Birmingham City is giving him food for thought ahead of the World Cup.
Scotland have qualified for next summer’s World Cup and 48-cap Dykes played an important role for his country.
The 30-year-old striker is expected to form part of Steve Clarke’s squad next summer, irrespective of whether his situation at Blues changes.
Dykes has been used as an impact substitute by Blues boss Chris Davies throughout the last 18 months but it hasn’t affected his international involvement.
Hibernian tried to sign Dykes in the summer and his future is up for discussion again ahead of the January transfer window.
Speaking to BBC 5 Live, Dykes said: “I want to be playing games consistently, as much as I can. We’re doing really well here at Birmingham and it’s been a tough season with the limited game time that I’ve got.
“We’ll see what happens. There’s still a few months until we can start thinking about international football or the World Cup but at the end of the day I do want to be playing, I want to be as fit as I can be going into these games.
“It’s going to be an exciting few months. I’m going to be doing extras in the gym to make sure I’m at top fitness.”
Scotland have been drawn in Group C with Brazil, Morocco and Haiti for the tournament that will be held in the United States.
Blues investor Tom Brady took part in the draw and Dykes had a request for the seven-time Super Bowl winner beforehand.
“I spoke to Tom Brady and I was telling him to make sure he put us in a good group and funnily enough he put us in with Brazil,” said Dykes.
“It’s a tough draw. We’ve got massive teams in there but I don’t think it’s something to shy away from. It’s a World Cup and we’ve proven ourselves before, we’re going in full of confidence.”
