James Maddison has praised Bruno Fernandes and branded the Manchester United captain as “underrated” after he produced a sensational performance during Monday’s 4-1 win at Wolves. Fernandes, 31, scored twice and grabbed an assist as the Reds recorded three important points at Molineux.
Fernandes got the ball rolling for United as he gave them the lead in the 25th minute, slotting the ball past Sam Johnstone after Matheus Cunha played the ball across the box.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde levelled for Wolves in first-half stoppage time, but that didn’t prevent United from winning the game. Indeed, the Reds were rampant in the second period.
Bryan Mbeumo restored the lead for United in the 51st minute after Diogo Dalot passed the ball into his path. Fernandes then laid one on a plate for Mason Mount to finish and score United’s third, before the Portugal international completed his brace late on, converting a penalty.
Speaking about Fernandes post-match, Tottenham midfielder Maddison hailed the United man. “Well Bruno was at the heart of everything. Bruno’s just such a top player,” ex-Leicester and Norwich ace Maddison told Sky Sports.
“I actually think Bruno’s… he actually doesn’t have a massive part in [the second] goal, he still has the ball in the build-up. But the other goals as well. I think he’s actually probably underrated to many, Bruno. And I know he gets a lot of plaudits anyway but I think he is kind of underrated, like, for the quality that he shows consistently.
“Just every time he’s on the ball, he does like to always look for the longer pass; he looks short, and some players have the ability to see every pass without having to look short, look long; he can just see it all. And the quality he has, you see with the Mason [Mount] goal, it’s on a plate for him. He does that time and time again, to be fair.”

The result moves United into the top six on 25 points from their 15 Premier League matches. The Reds sit level on points with Chelsea in fifth and one behind Crystal Palace in fourth.
Reflecting on United’s win at Wolves, Ruben Amorim said: “We played well most of the time. We should have a different score in the end. I’m pleased with the second half that we understood we had another opportunity.”
Mason Mount, meanwhile, praised his teammates after United secured a vital win on the road. “It was an important win,” he said. “First half we let them back in it and we go into the changing room frustrated. It was down to us to finish our chances, so we’re happy with the second half.”
