Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen has said it is ‘difficult’ to prepare for the January transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday are unsure on what business they can do this winter. SWFC are still waiting on an update on the EFL.

The Owls are still operating under the terms of a transfer embargo. It remains to be seen at this stage whether they will be able to bring in any players next month.

Head coach Pedersen has shared this recruitment update, as per a report by The Star: “As of right now, we don’t have any line from the EFL if we can do anything at all. We don’t know if we can have loan players, if we can have free agent players or buy players. We don’t know anything.

“But what we do in the background is that we try to have an overview of which loan players we could be interested in, which players will be on the free agent market in January, and then we try to make a list for our team and what it could look like. But one thing is how it could look, while the other is we don’t know what is possible.”

He added: “Kevin (Beadell) and his scouts, the coaches and me, we try to be as prepared as possible to handle it when there is a signal to do something. But right now, there is no signal that we can do anything at all. We can have some ideas, but can we pay £5? Can we pay £500-a-week? Can we pay £5,000-a-week? Can we pay £10,000-a-week? Can we pay nothing? We don’t know anything. It is roughly how we can do it, but the specifics are still quite difficult.”

Sheffield Wednesday latest ahead of January transfer window

Sheffield Wednesday are crying out for some reinforcements. SWFC’s squad is lacking quality and depth and they need additions.

The Owls were able to bring in Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass on loan from Cardiff City and Manchester United respectively over the summer, whilst Joe Lumley arrived on an emergency deal a couple of months. In addition, the South Yorkshire outfit have also delved into the free agent market to land Liam Cooper and Nathan Redmond.

However, they are still significantly lacking bodies and are desperate for some new faces. Pedersen was picked as their manager back in July after Danny Rohl’s exit.

The Dane moved to Hillsborough back in October 2023 to form part of Rohl’s backroom staff. He has won only once since taking the full-time gig but his hands are tied and he is doing his best with the limited resources that he has available at his disposal.

Sheffield Wednesday are in the hunt for new owners and will hope to get the situation sorted as soon as possible so that they can start planning for the future. They were mismanaged by Dejphon Chansiri and are now left to pick up the pieces following his controversial and lengthy tenure at the helm.

What now for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship?

Sheffield Wednesday saw their last game abandoned in the second half away at Blackburn Rovers due to a waterlogged pitch after heavy rain. SWFC were losing 1-0 at Ewood Park at the time after Yuki Ohashi’s goal.

The Owls remain bottom of the table after 19 fixtures and are a whopping 28 points from safety following their two points deductions behind Oxford United in 21st. They are joined in the relegation zone with Norwich City and Portsmouth.

Pedersen’s men will be in for a tough test at Watford coming up. The Hornets are only three points off the play-offs.

Javi Gracia was re-appointed by the Hornets back in September. He was brought back following their decision to part company with Paulo Pezzolano.
