Jamie Carragher has warned Leeds United supporters the club’s Premier league problems are not over just because of a change in formation and to expect a tough ride in the coming weeks and months. However, the former Liverpool player turned TV pundit, believes the Whites are a better proposition and are benefitting from the decision of manager Daniel Farke to change to a 3-5-2 formation.

Farke made the tactical switch during the game against Manchester City and while it came too late to affect the outcome, sticking with the new shape did help Leeds to beating Chelsea and then claiming a point against Champions Liverpool at Elland Road on Saturday night.

The difference in approach, confidence and quality from Leeds has been significant since the change, one which many supporters had called for earlier in the campaign. It’s a fact not lost on Carragher, but with a tough battle still ahead to stay in the division and no doubt bumps in the road to come, the Sky Sports man has warned that a system change has not wiped away all Leeds’ problems.

“We talk about teams getting results and how much it’s down to the manager – I think the upturn in form is a lot down to the manager,” Carragher told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“Second half at Manchester City, he changes the system, goes 3-5-2, brings a centre-forward and a centre-back on and takes off his two wingers. That feels like it was a huge difference second half and they took that confidence on.

“Maybe Leeds fans were calling for this a bit more, to be a bit more direct over these last few weeks when you consider how many 6ft players they brought in over the summer.

“We’re not saying that going to 3-5-2 means all of Leeds’ problems are finished. They’re going to lose games, they’re going to find it difficult, they haven’t got the quality of other teams. But as I said, he makes changes again and we see that impact.”
