There have been severe delays along the M4 all day on Tuesday, December 9, due to high winds caused by Storm Bram and emergency repairs being carried out on the Prince of Wales Bridge.
Everything you need to know:
- Since Tuesday morning, the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge has only had one lane open in both directions due to emergency lighting repairs. National Highways shut two lanes after urgent safety inspections of lighting columns on the bridge identified an “immediate risk”. They said that several lighting columns required immediate removal “due to risk of collapse”, but high winds must subside before the necessary work can take place.
- As a result of the lane closures, drivers are facing delays of around 70 minutes on the M4 eastbound, and delays of around 60 minutes on the M4 westbound.
- There is congestion up to junction 25 in Newport for eastbound traffic, and up to junction 20 Almondsbury Interchange for westbound traffic. This traffic has also caused long queues on the A4810 near the Magor Interchange, and northbound on the M49.
- The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge will be closed in both directions from 8pm on Tuesday evening, to 6am on Wednesday morning. HGVs will however be allowed to use the M48 Severn Bridge in groups of 10.
- Delays have also been made worse by multiple closures of the M48 Severn Bridge due to high winds during the day. One lane of the bridge is currently still closed for safety reasons.
