Several lorries have overturned on the M74 due to strong winds brought by Storm Bram. Emergency crews raced to a stretch of motorway between Junction 11 at the Poniel Interchange and Junction 13 at the Abington Interchange on Tuesday at around 4.45pm.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) told the Record at least three lorries had overturned. However reports on social media suggested up to six vehicles were left on their side.
As a result, the M74 has been closed off in both directions from Junction 11 to Junction 13 as emergency personnel deal with the aftermath of the crash. Road users also took to social media to document their shock and report on the traffic “chaos”.

Patricia Hodgins wrote: “I’m on the M74 driving back to Glasgow from Dumfries and there are lorries lying on their sides and one down a ditch. Scary stuff and I hope everyone is okay. Drive carefully folks if your out and about.”
Greig McArthur added: “Stay safe on the roads folks. I’m working at Moffat substation and just drove up the M74 and there were HGV’s on their side with one ploughed straight into ditch with it’s tail in the air! Fire brigade, police, ambulances are everywhere and blowing a hooly!”
Barry Brock said: “M74 is chaos. Lorries have overturned with the wind.” Peter Morgan continued: “Lorries overturned on north and southbound carriageways of M74 north of Abington services.”
A SFRS spokesperson said: “We attended three separate RTC on the same stretch of the M74. We have now left all of those scenes. In each incident it involved an articulated lorry which had overturned due to wind. There were no casualties or injuries.”
Police Scotland posted on social media: “The A74(M) is currently closed at Junction 11 southbound and J13 northbound near to Abington due to a number of overturned vehicles. A diversion is in place but motorists are advised to be aware and consider the conditions if travelling.”
An X post from Traffic Scotland added: “The M74 is currently closed in both directions between junctions 12-13 due to a road traffic incident. Alternative routes and extra travel time is advised currently. Delays are expected. Updates to follow.”
Traffic management system INRIX reported: “M74 in both directions closed, long delays due to overturned lorry from J13 A74(M) J13 Abington to J12 A70 (Millbank).”

It comes amid 90mph winds caused by Storm Bram. A ‘danger to life’ amber weather warning was issued as heavy rainfall and strong winds were set to batter parts of Scotland on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
The Met Office said the storm could cause damage to buildings and homes, and cause power cuts and travel disruption on Tuesday night.
