The Duchess of Sussex has finally been able to make direct contact with her father Thomas Markle, according to her spokesperson. On Friday, it was reported that Meghan Markle had “reached out” to her father after hearing that he was gravely ill in a Philippines hospital.
However, Mr Markle told The Mail on Sunday that he never received any message from his daughter, whether that be written or over the phone. Now, a new statement reveals that her father, Thomas, now has her letter.
A spokesperson for the Duchess said: “Given that a Daily Mail reporter has remained at her father’s bedside throughout, broadcasting each interaction and breaching clear ethical boundaries, it has been exceedingly difficult for the Duchess to contact her father privately, despite her efforts over the past several days. With the support of reliable and trusted contacts, her correspondence is now safely in his hands.”
Mr Markle has not yet confirmed whether or not he has received a message from Meghan since this new update from her spokesperson was issued today, Wednesday, December 10.
This update comes after Thomas Markle was admitted to hospital last week where he had an emergency operation, resulting in his leg being amputated.
It is believed a reconciliation with Meghan is something Mr Markle, 81, has wanted for years.
Speaking to friend Caroline Graham, Mail on Sunday US Editor, from his hospital bed over the weekend, Thomas said: “Of course I want to speak to her (Meghan) but I am not sure if these are the right circumstances.
“I’ve always said I am open to reconciling with my daughter. I have never stopped loving her. I don’t want to die estranged from Meghan.
“I want to meet my grandkids. It might be nice to meet her husband too.”
Further updates are expected to follow in the coming days.
