The Met Office confirmed that Gogarbank weather station recorded 16.6C, beating its previous December record of 15C.

A spokesperson said: “The previous December record for Edinburgh was at the Botanic Gardens with 16.C in 1948.”

The overall record for Scotland’s hottest day was set in July 2022 when 34.8C was reached in the Scottish Borders
