Police closed the road while they dealt with the incident
Upton Road was closed following a crash
A busy road was closed this evening after a van collided with a bus. The crash happened at around 3.40pm on Thursday (December 11) on Upton Road, near Seaforth Drive in Wirral.
Merseyside Police confirmed it involved a bus and a Ford E-Transit van. Arriva North West warned passengers of significant delays, announcing that services 413 and 414 were being diverted. In a statement posted on X, the company said: “Due to a police incident on Upton Rd, services 413 & 414 will divert via Sandbrook Lane, Manor Drive, Upton Bypass & Ford Rd in both directions until further notice.
“Delays are likely, please allow extra time for your journey.”
Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported the road was closed in both directions while emergency services attended the scene.
Witnesses described the bus as “really, really badly smashed”, with one person writing on social media: “Does anybody know what’s happened in Moreton with the 414 bus to New Brighton.
“The whole bus front in bits with police and ambulance and recovery? The windscreen looked like a bomb had hit it… I hope everyone involved is okay.”
Another witness said: “We were stood next to it when it happened, didn’t half make a bang! Everyone seemed ok physically and got out the van and bus quite quickly.”
Merseyside Police confirmed no injuries were reported. A spokesperson said: “Moreton Cross towards Upton was closed while emergency services were in the area but has since been reopened.”
Traffic returned to normal shortly after the road was cleared.
Traffic alert site Inrix said: “Upton Road closed in both directions at Seaforth Drive due to police incident.”
