A 48-hour weather warning has been issued in Greater Manchester – but rain is only expected to hit the region at certain times. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain from 6pm on Saturday (December 13), lasting until 6pm on Monday.

It covers a large area of northern England, including parts of Greater Manchester. Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside boroughs are covered by the warning, plus parts of Manchester, Salford and Wigan boroughs.

The Peak District and Pennines are also covered, plus much of Lancashire and Cumbria. In the worst-affected areas, the Met Office says more than 200mm of rain could accumulate during the 48-hour period.

However, this currently seems unlikely in Greater Manchester. In the areas of our region covered by the warning, the Met Office is forecasting a dry, cloudy night on Saturday, with only a 20 per cent chance of rain.

Spells of wet weather are forecast in Greater Manchester on Sunday, but this is currently expected to be light. Bolton, Bury and Rochdale are forecast for light rain during the morning and afternoon, while Oldham and Tameside are likely to see showers.

Another dry, cloudy evening is expected in Greater Manchester, with a less-than-50 per cent chance of rain expected by the Met Office. Overcast conditions are forecast on Monday morning and afternoon, with a 50 per cent chance of rain.

Meanwhile, Met Office maps currently show the heaviest rain to hit Greater Manchester on Monday afternoon. Maps also show some rain hitting the region on Sunday morning and evening.

Describing the weather warning, a Met Office spokesperson said: “Outbreaks of rain will spread in from the west during Saturday evening, persist through Sunday before eventually clearing away during Monday afternoon and evening. The rain will be heavy at times with accumulations of 50-70mm developing quite widely across the warning area and over 100mm across high ground.

“Totals will be highest across Cumbria, where over 200mm could accumulate in places during this 48 hour period. Strong southwesterly winds are also possible at times.”

Meanwhile, two weather warnings for rain have also been issued in parts of Scotland. One warning, for south-west Scotland, runs from 6pm on Saturday to 9am on Monday – while the second, in north-west Scotland, runs for 24 hours from midday on Saturday.
