A city council has called off a major Christmas event scheduled to take place this weekend because of expected bad weather. Adverse conditions including 50mph winds forecast for Saturday afternoon has led to the Bangor Christmas Festival being called off.

Bangor City Council said it “regretted to announce” that the 2025 event, which was due to take place in the city centre on Saturday, had been cancelled due to “adverse weather forecasts and associated health and safety concerns.” Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here.

It added: “The council recognises the excitement and anticipation that had built around the event and the disappointment this cancellation may cause.

“However, the safety of residents, visitors, performers and staff remains the council’s highest priority, and the forecast conditions mean the event cannot proceed safely.

“Bangor City Council thanks the community, partners, and participants for their understanding and continued support, and looks forward to delivering future events for the community.”

There was better news across the Menai Strait, however. Beaumaris Town Council confirmed their Winterfest was back open after it was damaged during Storm Bram, North Wales Live reports.

A spokesperson for the council said: “The storm caused extensive disruption to the Winterfest site, including damage to huts and infrastructure.

“Thanks to the swift response and close cooperation between Beaumaris Town Council staff and Ice Magic, the site was cleared, the ice rink repaired, and essential works completed in a short space of time.

“All huts have now been repaired and reinstated and are ready to welcome a wide range of local vendors and craft stalls. The ice rink is fully operational and the site is once again safe and ready for the public.

“While other Christmas events in the region, including the Bangor Christmas event, have unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the weather, Beaumaris has worked hard to ensure that Winterfest can go ahead.

“This has been a strong example of partnership working, determination and community spirit. Nothing keeps Beaumaris down.”

Town clerk of Beaumaris Town Council, Catrin Owen, said: “The work to restore the Winterfest site following the extensive damage caused by Storm Bran clearly demonstrates how effectively Beaumaris operates when everyone pulls together.

“The speed and professionalism shown in repairing the ice rink and restoring the site has been outstanding.

“The town council would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Ice Magic and to local businesses for their exceptional efforts and continued support.”
