An “old-style” pub has reopened its doors after a massive revamp. The Wellington on Picton Road in Wavertree is back to welcoming customers through its doors, greeting them with a completely new look. The pub, part of Admiral Tavern’s Proper Pubs, has been “completely revitalised” with an “elevated look and feel throughout”.

The team behind the venue believe the recent £315,000 worth of works will make for a better customer experience and atmosphere. Inside, the pub features new fixtures, fittings, furniture and flooring along with a spacious, updated main bar area and cosy lounge.

In addition, it now boasts a dedicated sports zone featuring a pool table, dart board and a flat screen television complete with Sky Sport, TNT and horse racing channels.

Operator Stephen Rickards, from South Liverpool but living in Wavertree, told the ECHO: “We closed around May time and obviously our regulars had to find somewhere to go.

“But since we’ve reopened, they have all come back, and we’ve had something different every day for them. The reopening has been going around by word of mouth, so the footfall just keeps getting more and more each day.

“I’m new to the customers, and they are new to me, but since reopening, it feels like we have known each other for years. It’s always a good laugh with a great crowd.

“Everyone always wants to have a chat with you; they are here for hours on a daily basis. It’s a proper, old community pub with a modern twist now after the revamp.”

Outside, The Wellington boasts a beer terrace that now features new wooden benches, atmospheric festoon lighting and decorated fencing for guests to enjoy. To complete the pub’s updated look, it has also received new lighting and signage at the front of the venue to welcome visitors.

Stephen, 40, who has two decades of experience in the pub industry, said: “It’s been a huge success so far. It’s fantastic to welcome everyone back through the doors, especially as we head into the Christmas countdown.

“The refurbishment has completely transformed the pub, and I’m so proud of its new look. As a local resident myself, it means a lot to be running a proper community pub at the heart of Wavertree, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it continue to buzz for many years to come.”

As part of Stephen’s commitment to his new role, he explained how he is excited to run a schedule of regular entertainment with events planned for every night of the week, including games evenings and open mic nights.

Proper pubs operations director, Matthew Gurney, said: “It’s a real pleasure to welcome Stephen to The Wellington and to see this incredible refurbishment come to life. The transformation has created a vibrant, inviting space that can be enjoyed by all the local community.”
