The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for rain with heavy and persistent downpours expected in six parts of Wales. It comes just a week after parts of the country saw widespread disruption following another amber warning that was issued as Storm Bram hit Wales.

The weather agency said up to 80mm of rain is expected to fall quite widely across parts of south and southwest Wales on Monday (December 15), with some places seeing close to 100mm of rainfall. Forecasters stated that fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing “danger to life”.

There are also two yellow rain warnings set to come into force, with one in place from Sunday evening, and the other in place on Monday.

The amber warning covers six areas: Bridgend, Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Swansea. It comes into force at 3am on Monday and ends at 9pm.

The Met Office said: “Heavy rain is expected across parts of south and southwest Wales during Monday. 50-80 mm of rain is likely to fall quite widely with some places seeing close to 100 mm.

“Given the recent wet weather and saturated ground, the likelihood of impacts is higher.”

The first yellow rain warning begins at 3pm on Sunday (December 14) and covers parts of mid and north Wales including Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd and Powys. It will remain in place until 3pm on Monday.

The second 24-hour rain warning comes into effect at midnight and covers much of south and west Wales. The full list of areas affected is: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Vale of Glamorgan.

This warning was first issued on Saturday before it was upgraded by the Met Office to cover more areas. For the biggest stories in Wales first, sign up to our daily newsletter here

A spokesman said: “Warning extended eastward across south Wales whilst the likelihood of impacts has been increased.”

The amber warning states that it’s likely homes and businesses will be flooded by the heavy downpours. It’s also expected that there will be disruption to public transport and poor driving conditions on the road.

There is a chance that some communities could be cut off by flooded roads, with power cuts likely.

The Met Office said: “Keep yourself and others safe; prepare to avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous road conditions. If you must travel, ensure you watch for possible danger and drive cautiously.

“It is not safe to drive, walk or swim through floodwater, avoid it where possible and if you are affected by fast flowing or deep-water call 999, and wait for help.

“Preparing a flood kit could save you from loss or damage due to flooding to your home or business. In your flood kit have: insurance and any other important documents; a torch & spare batteries; a first aid kit, prescription medicines and supplies for looking after your family members or pets; and warm, waterproof clothes, blankets, food and water.

“Consider checking on vulnerable people that you know including older people, those with underlying conditions and those who live alone; they may need support with food and medical supplies. If you are worried about your health or that of somebody you know, ring NHS 111.

“Stay up to date with the weather forecast for your area and follow advice from emergency services and local authorities.”
