Construction on Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind is moving ahead at full speed

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project has been advancing at a steady pace since being approved by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in 2024. The project will be anchored in Hampton Roads and has the added benefit of being the largest offshore wind project in the United States, marking the sentiment that Virginia has for the wind power sector.

The Virginia wind project has passed all the relevant regulatory hurdles

Ensuring the success of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project has been paramount for the project’s management. In 2013, BOEM held a competitive lease sale offshore Virginia, and Dominion Energy was selected as the winner of the lease that spans 112,799 acres, located 23.5 nautical miles offshore Virginia in federal waters.

Notably, on January 28, 2024, BOEM approved the Construction and Operations Plan for the project, allowing for the construction process to begin. With the construction heading towards a completion date in the near future, management has noted that once operations begin and the project actually starts producing energy, it will provide enough electricity to power up to 660,000 homes.
