RUSSIA, NOVOROSSIYSK, Dec. 15 — Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) severely damaged Varshavianka (Kilo in NATO classification) submarine of class 636.6 with underwater drone Sub Sea Baby in Novorossiysk port. The SBU reported that the Russian submarine has been effectively disabled.
The Russian submarine carried four launch systems for the Kalibr cruise missile. Russia uses them for attacks on Ukraine.
The Security Service said the submarine was forced to remain in Novorossiysk port after Ukraine’s successful strikes on ships in Sevastopol bay in occupied Crimea.
The cost of a Varshavianka-class submarine is approximately $400 million dollars. This class of submarine is also known as the Black Hole because of its hull’s ability to absorb sounds and remain undetectable by sonar.
SBU added that because of international sanctions that have been imposed against Russia, the construction of a similar submarine could now cost up to $500 million dollars.
This was a joint operation of the 13th Main department of counterintelligence of SBU and Ukrainian Navy.
