Up to 35 firefighters have been battling a blaze involving 300 tonnes of scrap metal waste in Birmingham.

West Midlands Fire Service said it responded to the incident on Park Road, Hockley, at around 4.25am today, Tuesday, December 16.

Six fire engines, a 4×4 brigade response vehicle and a hydraulic aerial platform have all been in attendance.

No injuries or rescues have been reported.

The fire prompted talk online oF a bad smell filling the air.

The fire service said that smoke from the incident was travelling towards the Lozells area of the city.

It advised residents to keep doors and windows closed.

Park Road was also closed to allow for the firefighters to work at the scene.

A fire service spokesman told BirminghamLive: “Shortly before 4.25am on Tuesday (16 December), we responded to Park Road, Hockley, Birmingham.

“Six fire engines, a 4×4 brigade response vehicle and a hydraulic aerial platform have been in attendance, crewed by firefighters from Highgate, Aston, Ladywood, Handsworth, Smethwick, West Bromwick and Perry Barr stations.

“This is a fire affecting approximately 300 tonnes of scrap metal waste in a yard compound.

“Three main jets have been in use, as crews work with onsite staff who are assisting us with moving smouldering metal using grab machinery. Good progress is being made.

“Drone operations have supported firefighters in identifying hotspots across the site.

“Park Road is closed and is expected to remain shut while we work at the scene.”
