Train services in Glasgow have been cancelled after waves smashed over the sea wall in Saltcoats, disrupting overhead lines.

Network Rail shared a video on social media showing water surging over the barrier and onto the Glasgow Central to Largs/Ardrossan route on Wednesday.

Services between Kilwinning and Largs/Ardrossan have been suspended until conditions improve.

When seawater comes into contact with overhead line equipment, it can cause the power to trip. Network Rail said that, under the current conditions, the power is likely to trip repeatedly, which could damage trains and leave services stranded.

ScotRai l has advised passengers to use alternative routes while the disruption continues.

They posted: “Weather conditions are causing sea water to “overtop” the sea wall defences in the Saltcoats area meaning we’re unable to run trains between Kilwinning, Ardrossan and Largs at present.”
