Any lingering Leeds United hopes of a deal to sign Harry Wilson have come to an end. While he remains out of contract at the end of the season, a new contract is said to be in the offing.
Of course, the Wilson saga stretches back to the summer. Leeds waited right until the final day of the window to try to push through a deal for the Fulham ace, and it backfired as Fulham pulled the plug.
Links with Wilson have remained. Partly because Wilson wanted to join Leeds on deadline day, and also because Leeds boasts many of his Wales teammates. But mostly, because of Wilson’s contract situation.

However, reports this week state that Wilson has an offer on the table and is now expected to sign a new deal at Fulham. Any tiny hope of a Leeds move is over, but the Whites have found the perfect alternative.

Well, Leeds have moved on. Adam Underwood is now plotting a £17m move for Sevilla’s Ruben Vargas and the similarities he shares with Wilson are eye-catching. Both can play on either flank and as a 10.
Vargas, like Wilson, has more than 50 caps for his country, and the duo are only a year apart in age. Even this season, Vargas has three goals and four assists in 12 La Liga games, only one assist less than Wilson.

He’s joint top scorer, joint chances created, more assists than any of his teammates and interestingly, has won more possession per 90 minutes than any other Sevilla star. Vargas would be a stunning addition.
While he might not be Wilson and he might not be the animal that the Fulham star is in the Premier League, he is the next-best thing. He is as close to Wilson that Leeds can get, without signing Wilson.
