Birmingham council’s household waste centres will be open for longer during the festive period.

All five of the city’s tips will operate from 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and then from 8am to 6pm at the weekends.

These extended hours start on Sunday 21 December and will be in place until January 31.

There are some exceptions on Christmas Eve, when the centres will open at 7am and close at 6pm.

The tips will also remain shut on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and will on New Year’s Eve, the tips will run from 7am to 6pm.

Visitors are advised to book before visiting all the centres except Castle Bromwich.

Councillor Majid Mahmood said: “These extended hours are about making recycling easier, more accessible and more convenient during one of the busiest times of the year.”

Meanwhile, the industrial dispute between the council and Unite the union is set to continue into 2026, with a third “megapicket” demonstration planned.

The protesters, organized by Strike Map, aim to mobilize people from across the country to join the action from 6am on January 30.

This “Megapicket 3-D” will attempt to shut down all five depot sites across both Birmingham and Coventry, as previous similar actions successfully did in May and July.
