Midfielder Luca Eden broke a record held for over five years when he made his Liverpool U18s debut, becoming the only 14-year-old to have done so for the club.

In coming off the bench against Man United in November, Eden broke the record for the youngest player in Liverpool U18s history.

Aged 14 years, eight months and 20 days, the young midfielder surpassed the feat of Josh Davidson – now a regular for the U21s – who debuted against Sunderland just 24 days after his 15th birthday in October 2020.

Unfortunately for Eden, it came in a miserable 7-0 defeat to Man United, which is the young Reds’ second-biggest loss in the history of the U18 Premier League.

Who is Liverpool record-breaker Luca Eden?

However it remains a milestone moment for a player who was promoted from the U16s ranks to take the place of Haydn Murray-Holme.

Eden, who joined Liverpool as a four-year-old in 2015, is a midfielder who captained the England U15s during the October international break and has already been backed by Jack Grealish.

Since records began, a total of 36 players aged 15 have represented Liverpool in the U18s league, but Eden is the first 14-year-old to do so.

That group of 15-year-old debutants includes Curtis Jones, Andre Wisdom, Neco Williams and Jack Robinson – players who have gone to establish themselves as regulars in the top level of professional football.

There is clearly a long way to go for Eden to emulate any of those players, but his involvement against Man United is a signal of faith from the Liverpool staff.

He is likely to stay with the U16s for the most part this season, but supporters may wish to keep an eye on any further progress from a player gaining admirers and breaking records.
