Drivers faced long delays on the M6 near Birmingham after a police-led incident.

It happened at around 9am today, Thursday, December 18, on the southbound carriageway between Junction 7, for Great Barr, and Junction 6 (Spaghetti Junction) for the A38(M) to Birmingham city centre and for Sutton Coldfield and Erdington.

West Midlands Roads reported queuing traffic in both directions following the incident.

The southbound carriageway was blocked, leading to six-mile queues back to Junction 10 for Walsall and Wolverhampton.

The northbound carriageway was reopened but one lane of the southbound carriageway remained shut.

National Highways said: “Lane 4 (of 4) is closed on the M6 southbound between J7 and J6 due for recovery of a car following a police led incident. Police are on scene.”

Delays are now said to be at 40 minutes with heavy traffic seen on motorway cameras.

An update from traffic information service Inrix said: “Severe delays and one lane closed due to police incident on M6 Southbound.

“[The incident is] from J7 A34 Birmingham Road (Great Barr) to J6 A38 Tyburn Road (Spaghetti Junction).

“Congestion to J10 (Wolverhampton/ Walsall). Lane four (of four) remains closed after being blocked for around 40 minutes.”

Both West Midlands Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service have been approached for a comment.
