Greetings from Brussels, where the days are short and the sky is grey.

Surprisingly, it is not particularly cold or rainy. That is good for our energy bills, which skyrocketed in 2022, when the war in Ukraine triggered a gas crisis. Our gas bills now are not as high as in 2022 – but are still far higher than in the years before the Russian aggression.

I meant to start by talking about December as a month packed with conferences, high-level meetings and last-minute budget spending splurges across EU institutions and other organisations with headquarters in the European capital.

But something else stole the headlines: another “-gate” scandal has hit the European capital, nicknamed, EEAS-gate.
