EDINBURGH councillors have approved planning application for an almost 1,000 home neighbourhood at Edinburgh Gateway.
The project, which also includes a 172-bedroom hotel, claims that over a third of homes will be “affordable”.
Developers Summix Capital will build a total of 957 new homes in the new West Edinburgh neighbourhood.
In addition, ground-floor retail, commercial and community uses are proposed, as well as the creation of new public realm and a station interface with associated landscaping, infrastructure, car parking and access arrangements.
The neighbourhood will be built on the former Saica packaging facility, with the 15.5-acre site being allocated as part of the council’s City Plan 2030 for residential-focused development.

The development masterplan defines seven development plots.
Plots one and two will deliver private sale housing; plots three and four are dedicated to build-to-rent homes; and plots five and six contribute to the city’s affordable housing provision. Plot seven will be for the new hotel.
Architects 3D Reid have joined the project as the lead designers and have produced in the application of what the future neighbourhood will look like.
Plots with detached homes can be seen separated by greenery, while across the road will see an apartment complex of several buildings.
Arcadis has been brought on as project manager, while structural engineering and building services engineering will be completed by Goodson Associates and Henderson Warnock respectively.
Summix Capital development director Stuart Black said: “The granting of this planning application for Edinburgh Gateway will create one of Scotland’s most exciting and best-connected neighbourhoods, representing a significant investment in the capital.
“Redeveloping one of the last significant pieces of brownfield land in the city into a brand-new, sustainable mixed-use community, Edinburgh Gateway will support the tackling of the city’s well-publicised housing emergency.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the local community and council officers, as we progress the delivery of the development.”
