Plans to demolish a former Edinburgh bowling club and replace it with student flats have taken a step closer.
On April 7, a pre-application notice was submitted to the council to bulldoze 36 Russell Road, the former Caledonian Bowling Club, and replace it with purpose-built student accommodation.
This week, a pre-application consultation was approved with a formal planning application, detailing the number of student beds and the scale of the building, expected in the coming months.

The building has more recently been in use as Corstorphine Roofing and Building and it is understood the proposed development will also incorporate landscaping, infrastructure and associated works.
Montagu Evans previously submitted a cover letter on behalf of their client Russel Road Edinburgh Ltd. The development was described as “major” as the area is in excess of 5,000sqm.
The bowling club opened in 1899 and officially closed in 2011 when it was turned into a builders yard. Several applications to demolish the building for student accommodation were received in 2016 and 2017 which were later withdrawn.
The most recent application was for a block consisting of 266 student flats within 56 apartments with a reception, common room, car parking and bin and cycle stores.
