Birmingham teachers are set to strike over ‘large scale’ redundancies in the new year.

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) plan to picket over proposals by Arthur Terry Learning Partnership to shed more than 100 jobs following what the union claims are ‘financial mistakes at the Trust.’

The ATLP is a Trust of 24 schools across Birmingham, Coventry, Staffordshire and Warwickshire.

Some of the educational establishments run by the trust in Birmingham include: Arthur Terry School, Stockland Green School, Mere Green Primary, Slade Primary, Brookvale Primary School, Deykin Avenue Junior and Infants, Osborne Primary and Hill West Primary.

Strikes have been called for 14th, 15th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th January. It is not yet clear how many schools will be affected by the strikes.

The NEU says it is hugely concerned that such large-scale redundancies will ‘damage students’ education’, claiming it will lead to larger class sizes, more workload for staff and less support for children.

The NEU have 768 members across the Trust. The result of the Strike Ballot was a 99% Yes vote with a turnout of 84% in a postal ballot.

Chris Denson, National Executive Member NEU said: “Members are really concerned for the students that they teach.

“Any cuts should come from the massive central office spend, not from teachers and support staff who do so much for the children that they support day in day out.

” Members are deeply concerned about the potential impact on support for children, for SEND support, for the impact on class sizes, not to mention the loss of jobs for members and their colleagues.

“The ATLP need to drastically re-think their plans. Cutting pupil facing roles will always damage education, wherever it happens.

“The massive central spend and central structure need to be cut, not support for students and their teachers and support staff jobs.”

Picket lines will run from approximately 7am to 9.15am on strike days.
