Wrexham University has become the first university in Wales to secure degree accreditation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, marking a significant milestone for business education in the region.

The accreditation applies to the University’s BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance and BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance with Foundation Year or International Year programmes.

It creates a direct pathway into the globally recognised Chartered Accountant qualification.

From 2026, students enrolling on the accredited courses will benefit from enhanced professional recognition and a clearer route into the accountancy profession.

The first graduates under the new accreditation are expected to complete their studies in 2029.

The University said the achievement reflects its focus on employability, industry engagement and widening access to professional careers.

It also aligns with its commitment to supporting the Welsh language across teaching, learning and campus life.

The partnership is with ICAS, the world’s oldest professional accountancy body, and is intended to strengthen Wrexham University’s role in developing skilled graduates for the regional and national economy.

Dr Ruth Slater, incoming Dean of Wrexham Business School, said: “We are incredibly proud to be the first Welsh university to achieve ICAS accreditation. This recognition demonstrates the quality, relevance and professional alignment of our Accounting and Finance degrees, and reinforces our commitment to preparing students for successful, impactful careers.

“Our programmes are designed to open doors – not only to the profession, but to opportunities that benefit employers, communities and the wider economy.”

Gail Boag, Executive Director of Learning at ICAS, said: “Accrediting Wrexham University’s accounting degrees is a significant milestone for ICAS as we continue to widen access to the profession. The University’s strong emphasis on graduate employability and close links with industry make it an excellent partner in preparing future Chartered Accountants.”

The University said the accreditation builds on its growing reputation for industry-informed teaching and professional partnerships, supporting its ambition to deliver skills and talent for the future.
