A Midlands town has been named as one of the best places to live in Britain.

Studies ranking the best towns and cities are all too common but these latest ratings have been determined by the people who live there, perhaps making this the definitive list.

Locals in towns and cities across Britain were asked their views on what it was like to live there and how happy they were being where they are from.

Responses helped form the list of ‘happiest places’ in the country.

Two places in the Midlands stood out, coming in the top 12 anywhere in the country.

This makes them some of the best areas to live in Britain, according to residents.

Leamington Spa was named best in the Midlands, and in 12th place nationally.

The posh Warwickshire town is surrounded by scenic countryside and perhaps sits in the sweet spot as being far enough away from big cities Birmingham and Coventry but within easy reach, so as not to be completely remote and cut off.

Just behind on the list in 13th place is Lichfield, the upmarket Staffordshire city famous for its cathedral.

Honourable mentions also go to Stratford-upon-Avon, Shrewsbury, Tamworth and Worcester, which were all named in the top 40 nationally, in the list compiled by property website Rightmove.

Scenic Skipton, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, was named happiest place to live.

At the other end of the scale, it wasn’t such good news for Walsall.

The industrial Black Country town was named the fifth least happy anywhere in the country – in 216th place out of 220.

Birmingham, Dudley and Wolverhampton were also ranked low down in 209th, 201st and 200th respectively.
