Residents who dump household waste next to public litter bins face a hefty fine or even prosecution.

That is the warning from Wrexham Council amid a rise in rubbish being fly-tipped near bins across the county borough.

Large quantities of bin bags filled with clothing, cardboard, household waste and newspapers have been recovered by Wrexham Council in recent weeks.

Councillor Terry Evans, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Environment, said: “Dumping bags of rubbish and other household waste next to public litter bins might seem harmless, but it’s illegal, unsightly and can attract vermin – creating problems for people who live nearby.

“Please don’t be tempted to leave your household waste next to a public bin – pop it in your bin or recycling containers at home if appropriate, or take it to one of our Household Recycling Centres at Plas Madoc, Brymbo or Wrexham Industrial Estate.”

Residents are also being urged to ensure that they use a licensed operator if paying for a “man with a van” to remove rubbish.

Licensed operators will have a ‘carriers’ licence and you can check if they have one by searching on the Natural Resources Wales website.

You should also make sure they give you the appropriate paperwork, guaranteeing they’ll dispose of your rubbish properly.

Fly-tipping offences can result in fixed penalty notices or prosecution.
