Chris Davies has paid tribute to Birmingham City’s history makers after they smashed through the EFL points record.
A 2-0 win at Blackpool, sealed by goals from Ethan Laird and Alfie May, clinched a 33rd League One victory of the season for runaway champions Blues.
They moved onto 108 points in the process and surpassed the 106 Reading accumulated in their Championship-winning season of 2005/06.
Blues boss Davies said: “I’ve been speaking to the players about the legacy we could achieve this season, the mark we could make in the footballing world. To achieve 108 points in a football season is something truly special.
“I said to the players in there to just make sure you sit back, and think about and reflect on what it takes to do that, how many football teams there have been, how many opportunities teams have had to get points in a season, and we are the team that’s got the most in the history of English football.
“I’m so, so proud of them all.”
In addition to being champions and record-breakers, Blues have also achieved their most away victories in a season. Blackpool isn’t an easy place to go.
Davies added: “Blackpool have got the highest xG (expected goals) in the league. We are second with that. Offensively, they are very good, one of the best teams. They always seem to score and create good chances.”
Saturday’s opponents Cambridge United have already been relegated from League One and they have lost half of their 22 home games to date. Davies senses an opportunity to reach 111 points.
“Not only have we achieved this record, but we have done it by having to play more games than any team in England and Scotland. It’s not like we’ve just turned up fresh for every game.
“It’s going to be our 60th and final match. To achieve what we did tonight, and finish the season with that many points, is something I’ll savour.”
