Apple’s iPhone Fold has multiple design elements that aim to raise the bar when comparing other foldable smartphones. First, it is reported to have a crease-free display, something that is lacking on current-generation devices, and a passport-style form factor with a wider display that was previously reported to be in the 4:3 aspect ratio. Samsung, likely realizing that its competitor has a better design that could be out in less than 12 months, a new report states that the Korean giant has set out to develop a competitor that has been dubbed ‘Wide Fold,’ with its launch scheduled for fall 2026.

The change in the aspect ratio will ensure that Samsung’s Wide Fold is comfortable for users, making it appear as if they are opening a notebook, improving the experience

A few specifications from ETNews mention the inner and outer display sizes of the Wide Fold. Apparently, Samsung’s upcoming foldable smartphone will sport a 7.6-inch primary screen, with an unnamed industry source stating that the cover display will measure 5.4 inches. With its 4:3 aspect ratio, the Korean giant’s next-generation foldable offering will sport a form factor similar to a passport, where the width is slightly longer than the height of the device.

As for why Samsung decided to adopt a design route similar to the iPhone Fold, it is something we are unaware of, but it could be related to improving the user experience. For instance, the unique aspect ratio will make the Wide Fold’s appearance similar to an open book while also reducing cropping when viewing web pages or different content. The remaining internal hardware details include 25W wireless charging, which will be the highest for any Samsung smartphone.

As for the chipset, given that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will likely sport the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the Wide Fold could ship with the same silicon. Coming to the expected launch, Samsung could unveil the passport-style foldable smartphone during its second Unpacked event, which is typically reserved for the company’s ‘Galaxy Z Fold’ and ‘Galaxy Z Flip’ models.

The development of this specific device is likely a response to Apple’s iPhone Fold. Given that Samsung has years of experience launching foldable smartphones, it can have the pricing edge, but will it garner mass appeal? We will wait for the upcoming launch and update our readers.
