A Glasgow newsagent’ has been firebombed days after two men were jailed for a machete murder bid on the store owner.

Emergency crews rushed to the Day-Today shop on Ladymuir Crescent in the Pollok area on Sunday, December 21, at around 1.40pm following reports of a fire. The fire was extinguished and no one was injured.

Following the incident, police issued an appeal for information after two men were spotted leaving a black Audi A6 at the scene before approaching the building.

It comes just four days after Liam McDonald, 36, was sentenced to 14 years behind bars while accomplice Dylan Haldane, 37, was jailed for 13 years at the High Court in Edinburgh following the shocking assault of Mohammed Arif, 35.

The attack took place outside the Day-Today store on Ladymuir Crescent at around 8.10pm on Sunday, August 13, 2023 A third man, William Dickson, 39, had already been jailed for nine years and four months in June last year for his role in the same attack, reports the Record.

Detective Sergeant Scott Hawkins said: “We are appealing to anyone in the area who may have witnessed anything suspicious around this time to get in touch.

“I’d also ask that anyone with CCTV or dash-cam footage review this and see if it has captured anything of significance, in particular the Audi that was seen outside the premises at the time.”

At the incident in 2023, emergency personnel were called to reports of a firearm and a knife being used. Mr Arif was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, where doctors treated him for life-changing injuries.

The court heard how the gang acted with others when they are said to have pursued Mr Arif and repeatedly struck him on the body with a machete as well as a knife. The attack was described as sustained and ferocious, with the victim left in danger of his life. The charges stated that the offence was aggravated by links to serious organised crime.

Jurors at the High Court in Glasgow heard that the men were accused of removing their clothing, dumping weapons in a bin and dousing them with accelerant in an attempt to set fire to them. Haldane was further alleged to have checked into a Glasgow hotel to wash himself in an effort to remove forensic traces, a move prosecutors said was designed to defeat the ends of justice.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Detectives are appealing for information after a wilful fire-raising in the Pollok area of Glasgow. Around 1.40pm on Sunday, 21 December, 2025, we received a report of a fire at a premises on Ladymuir Crescent.
