Multiple train services were cancelled in Greater Manchester on Monday evening (December 22) due to ongoing ‘severe disruption’ on the network. This was due to faults with trains and staffing issues, it was confirmed.
A fault on a train between Preston and Bolton resulted in lines being blocked at around 6.50pm. Services running through and between those stations faced cancellations or delays, Northern Rail said.
A statement from the rail provider read: “Due to a fault on a train between Preston and Bolton some lines are blocked. Train services running through these stations will be cancelled, delayed or revised. Northern train ticket restrictions have been lifted in the affected areas, including Advance and Peak restrictions, during this disruption. Restrictions will be reinstated once the disruption ends.”
National Rail said the train suffered a fault at Adlington, and that services could be delayed by up to 50 minutes, diverted or cancelled on Monday evening.
Services affected included the Blackpool North to Manchester Airport and Windermere / Barrow to Manchester Airport. The 5.48pm and 7.17pm services from Manchester Airport to Blackpool were both cancelled. Other services between Blackpool and Manchester Airport were also severely delayed.
Northern also warned of ‘severe disruption’ to other services operating between Manchester Oxford Road, Bolton and Wigan. Five train services, including the 6.03pm, 7.56pm and 9.03pm service from Southport to Oxford Road had been cancelled, as well as the 7.27pm and 9.30pm trains from Manchester Oxford Road to Southport due to a member of train crew being unavailable.
An update read: “We apologise for the cancellation of this service today. If the train you have a ticket for is cancelled, you can travel on any Northern, TransPennine Express or LNER service within 2 hours before or after your cancelled service was due to depart.”
