Nigel Farage is a dangerous buffoon who tries to sow division in British society.
His anti-immigration views and opposition to asylum seekers are designed to anger ordinary folk by getting them to believe foreigners are the problem. He used this vile line of attack in the Brexit referendum and will use it again as he tries to become prime minister.
His attack on Glasgow schoolchildren who do not have English as a first language was a new low. The reality is that immigration and asylum have been positives for the United Kingdom.
We should have a zero tolerance approach to illegal immigration, but the many people who have come to the UK properly have enriched our society. One such person is Sabir Zazai who arrived into the UK’s asylum seeker system from Afghanistan in 1999.
Sabir spoke no English at the time, but he has risen to become CEO of the Scottish Refugee Council and has raised his three Glaswegian kids.

He has said of the Reform UK leader’s attacks on Glasgow pupils: “Farage hadn’t fully checked the facts, as he wasn’t accounting for kids being fluent in English as well as another language, so there is not cultural smashing – the kids are embracing Scottish culture. It was an attempt to just divide our society and create fear and division. But I think we’re much better than that.”
Diversity is good for society and Glasgow’s decision over 20 years ago to house asylum seekers has been great for the city. Farage is an ignorant man and Scots should ignore his poison.
Sort housing hell
Nowhere is the gap between the SNP’s bold rhetoric and the grim reality bigger than on housing.
As of March this year, nearly 18,000 households were living in temporary accommodation like hotels and bed and breakfasts. Over 10,000 children are also living in short-term digs – a damning indictment of this government.
Our story today shows that over 100 poor souls died in temporary accommodation. Much is written about dying with dignity and leaving this world in the best possible way.
But dying in a home that is not your own is not how anyone wants to pass away. All governments should be judged on how they treat their most vulnerable citizens.
The record of this SNP government on housing and homelessness is a disgrace and they have failed. Ministers need to stop chasing headlines and start working with councils to get results.
