A Liverpool chippy is planning to stay open on Christmas day for a special reason. Portland’s Fish and Chips, on Sefton Street, in Brunswick is set to be open on Christmas day for a second year running. Owner Mubinul Hoque and his dedicated team will be offering a free, hearty Christmas Day meal to those who need it most.
Like last December 25, Portlands will support NHS staff, carers, emergency and key workers, older people, vulnerable members of the community, and anyone who may be spending Christmas alone. The shop plans to be open from 11am until 5pm.
The 36-year-old from Wavertree told the ECHO: “We give back and we do a lot of charities. It’s in our belief, in our religion. Christmas Day was one of those things where we don’t celebrate ourselves.
“So we would have been just shut. So it was like, why don’t we give back to the community?
“Because obviously as an independent business and a small business, we rely on the community to help us to succeed. And you have to like vice versa, give back to them as well.

“We just thought it would be amazing and the response that we got from like last year – it was mad. I was thinking ‘oh my God’. I couldn’t actually believe it.
“It was more emotional because I was thinking it’s such a special day. Everyone wishes they had good family and friends but you don’t realise how many people are by themselves and they just need that little talk.
“Just that little five or ten minutes, it makes their day up and it was an eye-opener. We will definitely do it this year bigger and better.”

Since taking ownership in February 2023, Mubinul has given back to his local community by their continued charitable donations to causes including the sponsorship of Nicosia Juniors U7 football team.
Visitors can expect chippy favourites including chunky cod fish fingers, fish and chip barms, and free tea and coffee, all offered completely free of charge from Portlands.
Mubinul added: “Honestly we’re super excited. I feel like it’s gonna be like crazy one this year but we’re ready for it.”
