A popular Royal Albert Dock bar and restaurant has been hit with a zero star hygiene rating for the second time this year. In April, the ECHO reported that Revolucion de Cuba had received the lowest rating for food hygiene following an inspection by Liverpool Council’s environmental health team on March 11.

According to the inspection, the bar and restaurant – which has been based at the Albert Dock since 2016 – was required to improve urgently in the cooking and preparation of food, the cleanliness of the facilities and the management of food safety.

When the ECHO contacted the venue in April, we were told the business voluntarily closed to make sure the problems identified were dealt with.

A spokesperson told us: “After implementing these measures, Liverpool Environmental Health re-inspected the site and confirmed there was no longer a risk to public health.

“We were therefore approved to reopen our kitchen with immediate effect.”

They added: “To ensure ongoing accountability and to benchmark ourselves against industry-leading standards, we also engaged an external agency, used by brands such as Nando’s, Starbucks, The Ivy Collection, and Deliveroo – to independently audit our kitchen.

“We are pleased to share this audit resulted in a 4-star (Good) rating out of a possible 5.

“We take food safety incredibly seriously and are fully committed to maintaining the highest standards at all times for our guests and our team.”

Reports suggest the business was then re-inspected and saw its rating rise to a more respectable three out of five.

But eight months on from that damning inspection, the Food Standards Agency website indicates that Revolucion de Cuba was inspected again and was again hit with a zero rating for food hygiene.

The FSA states that the bar and restaurant was visited by the city’s environmental health team on November 4 and was once again handed the lowest possible rating for food hygiene.

According to the FSA, urgent improvement is once again necessary at the business in the areas of hygienic food handling, the cleanliness and condition of the building and its facilities and the management of food safety.

Revolucion de Cuba has venues across the UK, including in Manchester, Birmingham, Belfast and Newcastle. The doors of the Liverpool site opened in 2016 and has become a staple of the Albert Dock hospitality scene ever since.

On its website, the business describes itself as a ‘rum bar and unrivalled cantina’.

The ECHO has reached out to the business for a response.
