Netflix’s sci-fi series Stranger Things has just released volume 2 of season 5, which includes three more episodes of mayhem and dread for Hawkins. Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower) has revealed his true intentions, but what does it mean for the fate of everyone else?
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, Bower spoke about his character Vecna and his true intentions since the beginning of Stranger Things.
During volume 2, the Abyss was revealed as an entirely new world where the Upside Down simply acted as a wormhole connecting this dimension to earth, and Vecna seemingly intends to combine both worlds. When asked why or what Vecna hopes to accomplish, Bower stated:
I would go with total annihilation and recreation of the world to how he would like it and wants it to be. It was something that he alluded to in season 4 when he’s talking to Eleven in episode 7. ‘We could remake the world, reshape it to however we see fit,’ I believe is the line. And so this is his chance to destroy and build.
Vecna’s plot sounds similar to many villains who came before him. Vecna’s kidnapping of children in volume 1 saw him attempt to gather Hawkins’ most vulnerable so he could bend them to his will and complete his mission of combining what once was Hawkins and a new world – The Abyss — where Demogorgons and other monsters hail from.
While more has been revealed about the Abyss, it appears the plans for this new world were already set in motion, as stated by Bower when Vecna and Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown) came face to face in season 4.
With so much left uncertain, the final two-hour finale will have to wrap up a lot of loose ends to ensure a satisfying conclusion for the Stranger Things main characters.

Whether Vecna will be successful remains unclear, but the Duffer Brothers have indicated that the finale will be a dark one. Though the series has pulled punches in the past and faced criticism for its assumed hesitancy to take bold swings, its seems likely Stranger Things will end with the whole world changed. Who’s changing it, though, remains to be seen.
Stranger Things season 5 volume 1 and 2, are available to stream on Netflix now, and the finale will be available to stream on December 31.
