Coronation Street A Coronation Street favourite was attacked in a shocking twist that aired on Christmas Day

A Coronation Street favourite was seemingly left for dead at the end of the ITV soap’s Christmas Day episode.

Will Driscoll, who recently celebrated his sixteenth birthday, moved to Weatherfield from Hull with his dad Ben, stepmother Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley), brother Ollie and grandmother Maggie (Pauline McLynn) after they bought the Rovers Return Inn but caused a great deal of upheaval for the teenager. It was revealed in the run-up to his sixteenth birthday that he had been sleeping with his athletics teacher, and he managed to get the situation twisted round so she ended up moving nearer to him.

In January, Megan is set to start a job at Weatherfield High, so has struck up a relationship with Daniel Osbourne, seemingly as a cover-up for her involvement with Will. Fans were horrified when Eva invited Megan to have Christmas dinner with them at the pub, along with Daniel, Adam Barlow, Alya Nazir, and Lauren Bolton.

Coronation Street Maggie was determined to ruin the family Christmas

While all this has been going on, Rovers landlady had been keeping a secret of her own, which started to come to light in the run-up to the big day. When Eva left the street initially in 2018, she had not long given birth to baby Susie and they departed for France just weeks after the little one’s dad ,Aidan Connor, had taken his own life. But now that she is back in Weatherfield, it became clear that something else had gone on while she was away.

Earlier this week, Adam Barlow spotted her looking teary and it quickly became clear that he was aware of her secret too. Through tears, she told Adam: “I’m a liar. I just can’t believe I managed to keep it from him for so long,” but Adam insisted: “Eva, you had to. What choice did you have?” Eva then wondered if she could have ever brought another baby into the world. Viewers have had to find out til Christmas Day to find out what really had gone on.

Seemingly hellbent on wrecking Eva and Ben’s relationship, Maggie had got wind of her secret involving Adam and had gathered evidence in the form of a letter, which she handed out as a Christmas present to her son. She told him to read it out, and Eva looked panic-stricken when she realised what it was. She tried to take the letter from him, but Maggie demanded he read it, to which Eva exclaimed: “You bitch!” It then came to light that Eva had had an abortion, and Maggie was convinced this was the result of an affair.

Daniel questioned: “What kind of a mother are you? To do this to your own family, and on Christmas Day?” but things took a turn for the worse when Ben punched Adam in the face. What he hadn’t realised, though, was Maggie had got the wrong end of the stick entirely. Just moments later, Eva, raged: “I was aborting our baby. The baby was ours [Ben].” On the verge of tears, Eva explained to Ben: “You know why we were going through a rough patch, don’t put that on me. The only thing I regret about that termination is not telling you. But how could I? You weren’t even taking my calls.”

She then insisted that Adam, whom she previously had a relationship several years ago, had no part in the whole thing, other than she bumped into him in Hull while he was catching a train and she told him her problems then. She later told Maggie that her stunt at the dinner table was “evil,” but the matriarch shot back: “I am a grandchild down because of you!” This was too much for Ben, who promptly threw his mother out of the house and was spotted by Roy Cropper, whom she persuaded to drive her to the Chariot Square Hotel.

Shutting the pub doors for the day, Eva and Ben began to dance to Fairytale of New York and apologised for everything that happened. But the drama was far from over, as a drunken Will had confronted Megan about her fake relationship with Daniel.

He was left seething after the son of Ken Barlow, who has been played by Rob Mallard since 2016, bought Megan a weekend away. Following her confrontation with Will, Megan stormed out of the pub. Moments later, night fell on another dramatic Christmas in Weatherfield, and Daniel lay unconscious in the ginnel.

Coronation Street is on ITV and STV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday and ITVX and STV Player at 7am
