Patriotic residents in the Sale area of Trafford are set to put out bunting and picnic tables to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Scores of streets across Greater Manchester are to close between May 3 and May 11 as the nation recognises the day the Allies declared victory over Germany in the Second Word War.
Three weeks ago, it looked as though no applications had been submitted for temporary street closures in Trafford.
But now, three streets in Sale have been granted permission by Trafford council to hold events.
On Bank Holiday Monday, May 5, households in Mornington Road will party between 2pm and 7pm.
On the same day people in Okehampton Crescent will do likewise between 12noon and 4pm.
Residents of Ennerdale Drive will hold their party Sunday May 11 at a time yet to be confirmed.
Trafford had asked for eight weeks’ notice for applications but said it would look to accommodate applications if any came in.
Meanwhile, the council has helped to organise two events for VE Day. On Saturday May 10 there will be a celebration of the end of the Second World War in Europe in the Trafford Centre at The Orient Stage and ‘horseshoe’ area.
Together with Trafford Centre, the Army Charity and the council, an afternoon tea will be served by the mayor of Trafford, Coun Amy Whyte and invited military guests.
A band will perform on stage during the event, and there will be displays by the Veterans Living History Museum.
On Sunday May 11, at a time yet to be confirmed, there will be a service to commemorate VE Day at St Paul’s Church, Sale which the mayor will also attend.
The events are to commemorate the unconditional surrender of Germany after five years of war ending in 1945.
Allied forces included those from the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Poland and the Soviet Union, now Russia.
