Perry Bamonte, the longtime guitarist and keyboardist for iconic British band The Cure, has died, the group announced on Friday.

The band revealed on their official website that Bamonte passed away at his home following a short illness over Christmas.

The post described him as ‘quiet and intense,’ calling him an integral part of the band’s story.

Their tribute included: ‘It is with enormous sadness that we confirm the death of our great friend and bandmate, Perry Bamonte, who passed away after a short illness at home over Christmas.

‘Quiet, intense, intuitive, constant and hugely creative, ‘Teddy’ was a warm-hearted and vital part of The Cure story.

‘Looking after the band from 1984 through 1989, he became a full time member of The Cure in 1990, playing guitar, six-string bass and keyboard on the Wish, Wild Mood Swings, Bloodflowers, Acoustic Hits and The Cure albums, as well as performing more than 400 shows over 14 years.’

The tribute continued: ‘He rejoined The Cure in 2022, playing another 90 shows, some of the best in the band’s history, culminating with the Show Of A Lost World concert in London 12st November 2024.

‘Our thoughts and condolences are with all his family’

Bamonte’s connection to The Cure began in 1984 when he traveled with the band as a roadie, serving as a personal assistant to frontman Robert Smith and working as a guitar technician.

When keyboardist Roger O’Donnell left the group in 1990, Bamonte stepped in, regularly performing on both keyboard and guitar.

Although Smith let Bamonte go from the band in 2005, the two remained on good terms, and Bamonte returned to tour with The Cure in 2022.

In 2019, he and the rest of the band were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Fans quickly took to social media to express their grief following the news of Bamonte’s passing.

One user simply wrote, ‘I’m so devastated,’ while another shared, ‘He was so talented. RIP.’

Many others paid heartfelt tribute, with one commenting, ‘What a loss to the community. Condolences to his family and friends.’

Formed in 1976 in Crawley, England, The Cure became one of the most influential alternative rock bands in history.

Fronted by Robert Smith, the group gained fame for their moody, atmospheric sound, blending post-punk, gothic rock, and pop elements.

Albums like Disintegration, Pornography, and Wish produced hits such as Just Like Heaven, Friday I’m in Love, and Lovesong, which remain staples of alternative music.

Known for their distinctive style—dark eyeliner, brooding lyrics, and emotionally resonant melodies—The Cure has maintained a devoted global fanbase for decades.
