Wayne Rooney praised the linkup between Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez during Liverpool’s win over Wolves in the Premier League.

Wirtz and Kerkez joined Liverpool during the summer transfer window but both got off to slow starts on Merseyside, with each player losing their place in the team earlier in the season. However, they have since regained those places, and their performances have been improving in recent weeks.

Wirtz in particular has caught the eye, and he scored the first goal of his Liverpool career against Wolves, latching onto a pass from another new signing, Hugo Ekitike, before finding the back of the net.

Rooney said that Wirtz’s goal was the highlight of Liverpool’s afternoon. β€œIt has to be [the highlight of the game] getting his first Premier League goal,” Rooney said. “I thought he looked good all game, especially his connection with Kerkez. It looked really good, especially in the first half and that is the main positive for Liverpool.”

Meanwhile, Wirtz insisted there is more to come from him after scoring what proved to be Liverpool’s winning goal against Wolves at Anfield.

Anfield erupted when Wirtz opened his account, and he spoke of his delight after the game. “It was very nice the feeling on the pitch with the fans around. I was very happy and I still am,” he said.

“I was confident that I would score one day. I wanted to start earlier scoring and assisting but it was like this and I have to accept it. I just know that it will come and I try to keep going like that.”

Wirtz’s goal came a minute after Ryan Gravenberch had opened the scoring shortly before half-time – but despite those quickfire goals, the Reds failed to add to their haul in the second half.

Instead, it was Wolves who were on top after the break, scoring within 10 minutes of the restart and threatening an equalizer for the remainder of the second half.

“We played a brilliant first half,” Wirtz said. “We lost the game and got it back. Everyone was working hard. In the last 20 minutes, we made it a bit difficult. I cannot explain why. We have to change that.

“That’s how we want to do it. We want to be there and be on top of the table. It’s not been an easy start for us but we’re doing better and getting the points.”
