An Edinburgh grandmother was horrified to discover a razor blade inside the packaging of a toy she purchased for her infant granddaughter.

Cheryl Gibb, from Gracemount, allegedly purchased the item in November from TK Maxx at Fort Kinnaird, only to realise days before Christmas there was a blade stowed in the box.

Photos show what appears to be a razor wrapped in toilet roll and sellotape wedged behind the plush. The 45-year-old told Edinburgh Live she felt “sick” by the realisation it could have harmed her eight-month-old granddaughter, adding it was “like a horror story”.

Police Scotland confirmed a report had been made regarding the razor and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Cheryl said: “I bought the toy and sat it in the sack [until closer to Christmas]. I added more things until sack was full.

“My son arrived on Christmas Eve and we went through the sack. Thank God we did that. Then he asked why there was a blade in that toy.

“It was just shock we found it. It was like a blade wrapped in tape or toilet roll and sellotape. It was like a homemade thing, implement for cutting something.

“I felt really sick. I thought of the worst scenarios. My worry was this was some kind of weirdo doing this to Christmas presents.

“My biggest concern was there may be others. I was trying to rationalize it, thinking maybe someone accidentally dropped it in there. I was very concerned and so relieved my son had noticed it and we hadn’t actually handed it over [to my granddaughter].

“I believe in fate and obviously she wasn’t harmed. I just didn’t want to believe someone wanted to do that deliberately.

“It’s like a horror story. Thank god it happened to me and we found it. The way it was in the Santa sack, it was going directly to the house and it may have been worse.”

Edinburgh Live saw communications between Cheryl and a TK Maxx boss, who said the case had been raised with their customer services team and health and safety department who will investigate the matter.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.40pm on Friday, 26 December, 2025, we received a report of a razor blade found within a toy purchased in the Edinburgh area. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

TK Maxx has been approached for comment.
