A message removed from a wall in Co Londonderry was a “disgusting slogan of hate”, a local councillor has said.

The slogan – which read “Sink the Dingys” (sic) – was scrawled onto a wall in the Main Street area of Moneymore.

Mid Ulster District Councillor Christine McFlynn took to social media on Tuesday to confirm the message had now been painted over.

Ms McFlynn thanked the local community for informing her of the graffiti.

“We have just celebrated Christmas the most peaceful time of the year, a time for family and yet a disgusting slogan of hate appeared damaging property, an attack on our new community who choose to live amongst us, work in our medical professions and industry,” she said.

“The PSNI have been in Moneymore today investigating this crime. They will be checking CCTV from local businesses and I ask the local community if you witnessed anything to please get in touch.

“The slogan has been painted over, Moneymore is a very welcoming village and certainly doesn’t want or need this activity.”

The PSNI has been approached for comment.
