Shoppers at Glasgow’s Forge Shopping Centre were left ‘terrified’ yesterday (Monday, December 29) during an alleged disturbance which led to a man being arrested. Witnesses reported hearing cries of ‘he has a knife’ and fleeing to safety, although Police Scotland have since stated that a blade was not involved in the disturbance.
Debbie McGhee and her 11-year-old son Jack were out to spend some of their Christmas money in Parkhead when they heard a “commotion” coming from outside the Savers store where they were shopping.
Debbie told Glasgow Live: “I just thought it was something minor, nothing serious, and then I heard somebody shouting ‘he’s got a knife’. We just looked at each other and ran to the back of the store. We were hiding at the back of the store and could hear more screaming and shouting.”

Police have stated that a knife or blade was not involved in the incident, but that a 34-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with a theft and disturbance. He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court today (Tuesday, December 30).
Debbie, who has just finished treatment for breast cancer, and her son were left extremely shaken. She added: “My son is autistic as well so he was absolutely terrified. I did not know what to do. It was a terrifying situation.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.20pm on Monday, 29 December, police received a report of a theft and disturbance in the Gallowgate area of Glasgow. A 34-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the incident, and is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday, 30 December.”
